Attack on vulnerable adults at the Wrights Meadow Centre

On 18 March 2025, the High Wycombe Gateway Club met at the Wrights Meadow Centre to host around 100 adults with learning difficulties for paralympic sports and craft activities. Paula Lee, Manager of the Wrights Meadow Centre, reported that a group of youths surrounded the taxis carrying the adults with learning difficulties and their carers, and harassed them as they were leaving the centre.

Everybody in Wycombe has the right to feel safe. I condemn the appalling attack on the members of High Wycombe Gateway Club, who are some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

My team and I promptly contacted Thames Valley Police as well as the Wrights Meadow Centre team. I am pleased to hear that Thames Valley Police are investigating the incident as a public order offence and that they will be increasing patrols in the area.

I encourage anybody with any information to report it to the police. For those who wish to remain anonymous, information can be shared confidentially through Crimestoppers 0800 555111.

Paula Lee said:

It was absolutely terrifying for the adults with learning difficulties. It is making them scared to come back to the club, which is so important for their mental and physical well-being. They take part in paralympic sports, including boccia and curling. They have always felt safe here. The fact that has been compromised is the most heart-breaking thing of all.

Councillor Annie Baughan said:

I was disgusted to hear about the attack on vulnerable people enjoying the Wrights Meadow Centre. It must have been very upsetting everybody, including the staff and volunteers.
