I visited High Wycombe Church of England Primary School to hear about the children’s community campaigns. The school follows the Church of England’s Courageous Advocacy programme, which encourages children to speak out on issues of injustice, on behalf of those whose voice is not often heard.
I was inspired by the children’s passion for improving our community. I enjoyed hearing about Year 5’s campaign to Free the River Wye, making it into a focal point for Wycombe.
I will pass Year 6’s proposal for improving the safety of the junction in Desborough Road to the leader of Buckinghamshire Council at our next meeting.
The younger children were equally impressive, presenting campaigns about saving bees, trees and endangered animals.
I was also delighted to meet Kai, the winner of my 2024 Christmas Card competition.
High Wycombe Church of England Primary School headteacher, Mrs Hawkins, said:
As a school, we are deeply committed to caring for our world and all those who live in it.
Our Christian vision inspires us to be strong and courageous in making our community a better place.
Over the past few years, our students have been identifying areas in our local community that need improvement and taking action to become agents of change.
Inspired by figures such as Marcus Rashford and Sir David Attenborough—who have used their voices to drive meaningful change—our students understand that while they may be young, their collective efforts can make a significant impact. This belief made Emma Reynolds’ visit particularly special, as she took the time to listen to their ideas and engage with their projects.
We are excited to continue working alongside local leaders, organisations, and our wider community to bring about real and lasting change.”
